アウトライナーと呼ばれるソフトウェアは、テキストベースのダイナミック・メディアとしての可能性をもっている。テキストデータ限定だが、ひとつのファイル上で自分の望む簡易ソフトウェアをデザインし、それを使ったデータの加工や、そのアウトプットを新しいデータとして管理することもできる。
私は、このダイナミックなデータベースがアウトライナー上で実現できる理由として、1) アウトライナーがテキストデータのツリー構造を自由に編集する機能を備えていることと、2) そのツリー構造がデータベースやさまざまなソフトウェアの機能を記述するのに適していることの２つが重要だと考えている。[つづきを読む]

Comments : 保全研究とその実践現場のギャップを埋める必要性を説いたオピニオン論文。自然保護区で進められている保全対策のほとんどが、個人の経験だけに基づいて行われている証拠を示した上で、1. 保全対策の意思決定は、科学的データ evidence を広く体系的にレビューした上で行う必要があること、2. その対策の成果もデータとして蓄積し、公開する必要があることを強く主張している。ここで言う科学的データとは、コントロールのある実験結果やランダムサンプリングされた観察データから日々の観察事例の記録までの、さまざまな質のデータを指す。
多くの人が当たり前のことのように感じ、口を揃えて唱えている解決策がまったく実現されていないとき、私たちはどう行動すればいいのか。この著者らは、問題が実在する証拠をポイントをついた形で示し、解決策を分かりやすく提案している。しかし、そのやり方が革新的という訳ではない。彼らは、保全現場改革の具体的なモデルとして、医療現場のシステムが適していると明言している。保全分野よりも数10年早く、科学的データに基づいて診断し治療を行うという変化が進んでいたからだ。この事実は、生物多様性の保全に関わる人々にとって興味深いものだが、保全を人の医療に例えてその仕組みを踏襲するアイディア自体は、斬新なものではないと理解している。アンケート調査の方法や解析も、シンプルなものだ。
この論文の意義は、発表後に提案した内容が実現されていること、そして、その効果も定量的に報告されていることだと考えている。彼らはどのように行動し、どこまで実現できたのか。そして、今、どのような問題に直面しているのか。それらを理解する上で、彼らの出発点を知ることは重要な意味をもつ。[概要も読む]

Comments : 保全研究と実際の保全活動のギャップ “Research-implementation gap” を示した初期の研究のひとつ。保全生物学でも最重要の分野である保全モニタリング conservation monitoring (保全優先度の高い場所を特定することなどを目的とする) 研究を取り上げ、その多くが実際の活動への応用そのものではなく技術開発を目的としていること、その結果、実際の保全活動に結びついていない研究が多いことを指摘した点が、この論文のウリだと思う。ややラディカルな議論も印象的。
ただし、その実証方法が甘い印象。論文著者を対象としたアンケート調査の結果が主で、このギャップがあるとする根拠も、実際の保全活動に適用された論文の割合が小さかった (全体の1/3) ことだけである。保全活動側の情報、少なくとも関連する保全プロジェクト数と、その中で保全研究の成果を取り入れた研究の割合などを、示す必要があるのではないだろうか。[概要も読む]

Laboratory experiments and simulations too expensive or difficult to prepare could easily be demonstrated. Our design strategy, then, divides the problem. The burden of system design and specification is transferred to the user. This approach will only work if we do a very careful and comprehensive job of providing a general medium of communication which will allow ordinary users to casually and easily describe their desires for a specific tool. ConservationEvidence.com is a website to provide scientific evidences that can be useful for making a decision of conservation practitioners.
I am interested in such activities to bridge the ‘knowing-doing’ gap. There are lots of things what I can learn from this.
